Culinaria: A Taste of Food History on the Prairies

This Event looks great and it's located at the beautiful and historical Lougheed House in West Conaught-- thought I think the house is always beautiful, the property comes alive in the Spring and Summer as the stunning gardens fill with unique and colorful foliage.

Collecting Culinaria: An exhibition of cookbooks and domestic manuals mainly from the Linda Miron Distad Collection.
June 18 – October 5, 2014
**

The Linda Miron Distad Culinaria Collection, housed at the University of Alberta Libraries, currently consists of more than 3,000 food-related texts from around the world, spanning several centuries. Collecting Culinaria features cookbooks and household guides from the collection, as well as other selected items from the Library’s holdings. The exhibition, and accompanying catalogue, highlight some of the collection’s most intriguing texts and their themes, including manuscript cookbooks, dietetics and health, and celebrity chefs. Collecting Culinaria draws from and celebrates this vast and diverse trove of social, cultural, and gastronomic history. Lougheed House is grateful to partner with the Bruce Peel Special Collections Library at the University of Alberta, to bring you this exhibit.
The public is invited to the opening reception on Wednesday June 25th, from 6.30-8.30pm with cash bar, where the curators, Merrill Distad and Caroline Leiffers, will be in attendance.

Stuart McLean: Christmas Concert 2013

Yes, it's August (AGAIN) but it's also the end of August and that usually means thoughts about Christmas (AGAIN). It's true but that's only because this is the time of year that the Stuart McLean Christmas Concert tickets go on sale (AGAIN).

You might SHOULD be familiar with his heart warming show in the CBC, well this is live and it's all about Christmas and all about fuzzy warm traditions and doing things from the heart. For me, there is no better way to start off Christmas then with a dose of Stuart McLean. Love!

The concert always takes Foodbank donations by way of non-perishable food items and cash. There is plenty spiced eggnog (for adults and children) and holiday spirit served up. I personally can't think of a better way to start of the beautiful holiday season.

Kim's Convenience presented by Theater Calgary

Every year my friend Diana and I buy subscription tickets to Theater Calgary. I love this time of year, summer is about parties and being outside and a break from the norm but as the days get shorter and the nights get cooler, we all migrate inside and experience theater. The first play of the season always welcomes this transition.

This year, the play is called Kim's Convenience and I'm excited to see it. It has received rave reviews since debuting at the Toronto Fringe Festival last year, critics calling it touching and funny (my favorite combo of emotions if you ask me).

Date(s): Sept. 3 - 29
Venue: Max Bell Theatre, EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts, 205 8 Ave. SE
Tickets: Prices vary

Evil Dead: the musical

It's back and covered in blood... again. If you were in Calgary about 4 years ago, walking downtown on a warm August night, you may have experienced it. Handfuls of people laughing and gallivanting around, participating in all types of debauchery...wearing white shirts covered in blood. Ruby red, sticky, washable blood.

That was the summer when Evil Dead: the musical first came to town with it's campy lyrics and splatter zone, it was the hottest ticket in town. Those of us who went became greedy, going not just once but sometimes three of four times causing the production to hold over an extra month due to the popularity and demand. It was fantastic.

Embrace the mess and wear your best white shirt. Buy your tickets in the splatter zone. Should you feel a little shy about it, there are plenty of seats out of reach. Just remember, messy is more fun.

Starting August 14th
Tickets range from $25 and up

located at the Pumphouse Theater on 2140 Pumphouse Avenue Southwest, Calgary, AB T3CTP5

What the gardens use to look like.

Devonian Gardens opened in 1977, it was a state-of-the-art facility that attracted international attention. Thirty-four years later, much of the infrastructure had exceeded its 30-year lifecycle, and The City of Calgary Parks is rejuvenating this key downtown attraction.

Devonian Gardens will be reopening to the public on Wednesday, June 27, 2012. After a four year closure and complete renovation, the new Gardens will once again be a favourite destination for lunch crowds, tourists, families, and corporate and private events.

The Calgary Folk Fest Comedy Tent

For the first time ever The Calgary Folk Fest will include the jeers, cheers and chuckles of talented funny people in their newest addition... the Talk Tent.

The Talk Tent will run Saturday and Sunday from 11 am - 5 pm, and is programmed chock-a-block with stand up comedians, interviews, and a special celebration of the 100th birthday of Woody Guthrie. Bring your festival chair and have a seat on the grass under the tent (it will be shady!).

Here is a peak at who will be attending:

Atomic Improv

Donovan Workun and Mark Meer have been creating comedy-on-the-spot based entirely on audience suggestions for over 2 decades. Their fast paced, high-energy show incorporates a range of styles, characters and hooks to produce a comedy pressure cooker. They’ll also be doing sketches from their national CBC Radio comedy program The Irrelevant Show, an irreverent take on pop culture that ranges from the everyday to the surreal, including scenes about family life, dating, relationships, the workplace, the news and superheros.

Chris Fairbanks

Stand-up comic, writer, artist, actor, twitterer, skateboardinger. He’s a correspondent for action sports channel Fuel TV and a Comedy Central reality show Reality Bites Back regular. When not touring as a stand-up comic, Fairbanks earns his living as a poster artist, animator and illustrator.

Richard Flohill

Richard is a Toronto-based publicist, writer and concert promoter who has influenced, supported or managed more than 100 artists over 40 years. His experience and abiding love of music make him an informed and engaging presenter and interviewer who gets deep into artists’ music, history and stories. A dedicated carnivore, Richard has thrived all these years without letting a piece of lettuce, a carrot or cucumber pass his lips. He’ll do a panel with festival artists on their war/travel stories, interview individual artists and share information about how to make a living in music.

Kevin McDonald

Comedian, actor, writer and director, The Kids in the Hall co-founder Kevin McDonald is known for his popular recurring characters the King of Empty Promises, Sir Simon Milligan and Jerry Sizzler. McDonald has appeared in many films and television programs, including Seinfeld, Friends, MADtv, Tim and Eric's Awesome Show Great Job! and Arrested Development and hosted his own CBC show Sketch with Kevin McDonald.

Derek Seguin

A quintessential performer, seasoned stand-up comedian, actor, host and narrator, he’s a regular on CBC Radio’s The Debators and Just for Laughs. Derek’s takes on the world have a hysterical Quebecois flare. Whether ragging on politics or describing life with his children, he deftly brings audiences into his perspective.

Walking Woody’s Road

Jimmy Lafave and his collaborators celebrate and chronicle the life and writings of legendary singer/songwriter Woody Guthrie for the 100th anniversary of his birth through stories, songs and video.

The schedule will be announced alongside the full weekend schedule at the end of June.

Doc Soup launches with powerful film that documents war on and off the battle field

The first installment of the DocSoup series will feature the acclaimed film HELL AND BACK AGAIN, which follows a young wounded marine from the battle fields of Afghanistan through his subsequent rehabilitation process. This film provides a powerful, unique, and intimate portrayal of the effects of war and the real battle soldiers must face when they come home.
This film is coming off a World Cinema Jury Prize win at the 2011 Sundance film festival and has been toted as "One of the greatest war films of this generation." by AMC's Filmcritic.com. It's not to be missed.

Two of CIFF’s most popular films to have their theatrical debuts in Calgary!

WIEBO'S WAR chronicles the leader’s close-knit Christian community in northern Alberta – the infamous Wiebo Ludwig – and his long struggle with the local oil & gas industry. The documentary sheds light on the family’s fascinatingly complex situation. It will be screening at the Plaza from October 22 – 26. Check the Plaza Website for showtimes.  View trailer here.

A LEGEND OF WHITEY - a CIFF audience favourite - is currently screening across the country and will be playing at The Globe Theatre from October 28th – Nov 4th. The buddy comedy takes place in the Wild West and features Loose Moose alums – and we can’t forget stars the cult classic Fubar –Dave Lawrence and Paul Spence as two half-brothers on the run with a sacred white buffalo.  This film is full of laughs and local celebrities.

STARBUCK - CIFF's People's Choice Award winner will be playing Sunday to Wednesday at the Uptown.  This crowd-pleasing comedy is about a man who may have fathered 533 children through anonymous sperm bank contributions.

Perogy Boyz

Eastern European Sausage. Gourmet Perogy's. Mobile. That's all you need to know about it right now. Everyone... Say Hello to Perogy Boyz coming Summer 2011.

Food trucks are making their way to our city (it's about time, I mean there are places in Utah that have Cupcake mobiles... catch-up Cow Town!) so that's exciting. I love street food. There's something wonderful and a little barbaric about it. And Perogy's? That's damn near exciting. I'd be way more likely to eat that then a hot dog after a night at the bar.

The PB (Perogy Boyz) are having a private and now officially full menu tasting party in a few weeks at Taste. I'm sure that shortly after that they'll be hitting the street. There isn't a date yet but I'm sure I'll be the first to know.
