An Italian Sunset: Mountain View Connection & Lougheed House

I have always enjoyed Chamber Music, it sounds weird-- I think. I came home from a day of school in grade 4 raving about these high school students who came to perform for my class. They style of music was apparently called "Chamber Music" and all I could picture was a chamber pot and someone playing a violin into it but I was still in love. My  mum thought I was crazy....

Since then, I have found a special place for classical (and more specifically Chamber Music) in my life as I have found it to be powerful at creating a peaceful mindset. When I saw this event I jumped on it, the Lougheed House is beautiful and as a big fan of Italian opera's.. personally, I can't think of a more beautiful way to spend a Monday night.

Oh and wine.

PHANTOM WING: a pre-demolition project at King Edward School

Remember when they did Wreck City? Well, this is some what along the same lines.

Explore the abandoned wing of Calgary’s fourth oldest school, re-imagined by 30+ Artists prior to demolition. Through a series of large-scale artworks, PHANTOM WING explores the soon to be demolished 1960s wing of the historic King Edward School, before it's redeveloped as a multidisciplinary arts hub (cSPACE). A community artists and performers have taken up temporary residence within the abandoned wing, creating infestations, fire-bell installations, psychedelic portals, Girl Gang Dance Parties, intercom performances, water-features, poltergeists, and more. The resulting exhibition will be both an echo and a bang: a reflection and a mirage. In essence, PHANTOM WING proposes the creation of a phantom limb – an event designed to resonate long after the building is severed from its adjoining sandstone counterpart.

Stuart McLean: Christmas Concert 2013

Yes, it's August (AGAIN) but it's also the end of August and that usually means thoughts about Christmas (AGAIN). It's true but that's only because this is the time of year that the Stuart McLean Christmas Concert tickets go on sale (AGAIN).

You might SHOULD be familiar with his heart warming show in the CBC, well this is live and it's all about Christmas and all about fuzzy warm traditions and doing things from the heart. For me, there is no better way to start off Christmas then with a dose of Stuart McLean. Love!

Kim's Convenience presented by Theater Calgary

Every year my friend Diana and I buy subscription tickets to Theater Calgary. I love this time of year, summer is about parties and being outside and a break from the norm but as the days get shorter and the nights get cooler, we all migrate inside and experience theater. The first play of the season always welcomes this transition.

This year, the play is called Kim's Convenience and I'm excited to see it. It has received rave reviews since debuting at the Toronto Fringe Festival last year, critics calling it touching and funny (my favorite combo of emotions if you ask me).

Date(s): Sept. 3 - 29
Venue: Max Bell Theatre, EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts, 205 8 Ave. SE
Tickets: Prices vary

Movie: For a Good Time, Call...

I went to a screener of For a Good Time, Call.... last night and I loved it. It was fresh, it was funny, it was bubble gum pink mixed with zombie strippers (minus the zombies). It was Bridesmaid's reduced. It was a dirty talking girlfriends and sex toy parties. It was a movie that was filmed in 16 days and you can't tell one bit. Simply perfect like confetti cupcakes and butter cream icing with sugar skull candies.

It's spanks as a date rape preventive.

It's 1-800-mmmHmmm

It's Snow White meets Barbarella and they become besties.

It's Justin Long, Kevin Smith and Seth Rogan all smashed in one.

It's sweet but with edge. This is a movie to bring your girlfriends too, maybe your guy friends (they'll enjoy the vulgar, sexy conversations) and perhaps your progressive, independent mom if you have that kind of an adult friendship with her. Don't bring your kids though (side note, I'm sick of people bringing babies and kids to movies that aren't meant for kids)- that's a no-no for sure.

It's girls being real, girls being funny and girls being awesome. If you have no qualms about sexy talk and sass then I think you might like it. It made my night but then I went into thinking it was going to be an awful movie that was filmed in 16 days that might make me roll my eyes out of pure classlessness.

I was wrong. It's fab. Its a good time with no strings attached.

and that's my cheese review of the day. xxoo

Hipster Love Story: Gotye with Chairlift & Jonti

You may have heard, Gotye is coming to calgary. If you've listen to the rest of the album you'll understand that there is more to the band then just a catchy break-up song. That's not what I'm here to tell you though, there are two bands opening up for Gotye... one of them being Chairlift.

Be prepared for a great mood lifter with the likes of this new song from Chairlift. It just makes you want to dance carefree through a library just like the cast of Breakfast Club. Catchy, poppy and the perfect way to kick off your work week, here’s “I Belong in Your Arms”

Sounds like a hipsters love affair if you ask me. I'm kind of excited for this.

downtownfood: simple. elegant. local.

When craving delicious, farm fresh cuisine, Downtown is the place to go!

Focused on sustainability and local ingredients, Downtown Food's small, well-crafted dinner menu inspires your palette with new flavours like the savoury watermelon salad. Signature dishes stand out like the bold tastes of the Korean BBQ-inspired Noble Meadows Crispy Duck Leg. Working with local Albertan farmers directly, you know that what arrives on your plate is healthy and environmentally sustainable.

While it might not be the easiest place to find (but hey, that's what a GPS is for), Downtown Food is centrally located with plenty of parking spots nearby.

Evil Dead: the musical

It's back and covered in blood... again. If you were in Calgary about 4 years ago, walking downtown on a warm August night, you may have experienced it. Handfuls of people laughing and gallivanting around, participating in all types of debauchery...wearing white shirts covered in blood. Ruby red, sticky, washable blood.

That was the summer when Evil Dead: the musical first came to town with it's campy lyrics and splatter zone, it was the hottest ticket in town. Those of us who went became greedy, going not just once but sometimes three of four times causing the production to hold over an extra month due to the popularity and demand. It was fantastic.

Embrace the mess and wear your best white shirt. Buy your tickets in the splatter zone. Should you feel a little shy about it, there are plenty of seats out of reach. Just remember, messy is more fun.

Starting August 14th
Tickets range from $25 and up

Tuesday Night Punk Rock Bingo

It's Tuesday, a middle child of the work week. No one really pays attention to her, it's between the hated older brother Monday and the more sassy younger sister Wednesday, it's at the start of the week so it even comes after Thursday.

Tuesday is a fun day though because not only do you have Taco Tuesday at Tubby Dog BUT it's also PUNK ROCK BINGO NIGHT! Both Broken City and The Ship and Anchor tip their paddles to these weekly events. If you cheat, you get a beat. If you win, you get some kind of wacky prize as your trophy. Have fun, enjoy and be prepared to wake on covered in bingo dobber.

Lucy Lost Her Heart

Today I bought my tickets to Theater Junctions production of Lucy Lost Her Heart. This is a second time around for this postmodern fairytale that investigates identity, lost memory and the game of truth and lies.
It's playing for a short time, from March 14th till March 17th.

The town of Lucy has strangely disappeared. Its inhabitants retreated into the tunnels of the abandoned mine and now they are stuck, suspended in time, caught like flies in honey. Pocahontas, Lost Soldier, FLIP, Red, Pierre, and a prehistoric bear wander through dark corridors haunted by history, attempting to understand where they are and how they might find a way out.

Lucy Lost Her Heart interrogates the violence of the past in relation to the possibilities for the future. Can our desire to “return home” lead us through the pain and anxiety of what the future might hold? The underground city of Lucyland opens onto a surreal landscape of stories and dreams as the characters attempt to understand their new reality, and to reinterpret themselves in a world where inventing stories makes the future possible.
Wide open, spare—equal parts beautiful and unnervingly empty.
Calgary Herald
Theatre Junction’s company of artists is a performance ensemble formed by Mark Lawes, Theatre Junction’s founder and artistic director. The ensemble is comprised of a unique combination of people, skills, disciplines and backgrounds, featuring actors, dancers, musicians and a sculptor. Together they fuse creative languages that reflect the multiplicity of the public and the many different points of view that are at the essence of our changing world. After premièring Lucy Lost Her Heart at Theatre Junction GRAND in March 2011, Theatre Junction was invited to Usine C in Montreal to be a part of their 2011–2012 season of international performance. Before taking their meditation on death, desire and the Canadian west on the road, Lucy Lost Her Heart will be re-created in Calgary as part of the 2011/12 season.
Haunting, catastrophic, addicting — this performance covers all bases.

Something a Little Different for Valentines Day

This season's In Residence program features award-winning spoken word poet Shane Koyczan. On the most celebrated day of love, Koyczan will be back to premiere more new work directly inspired by his time visiting the Glenbow collection which exposed him to many stories of love.

Koyczan is remembered by many for his performance at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. For many, his performance was the highlight of the evening and it was that performance that launched Koyczan to the world stage.

The sincerity and wit in Shane's poems are known to speak directly to the heart and you may find yourself laughing hysterically and crying uncontrollably all in one evening. David Bidini, who writes for The Globe and Mail remarked, "Shane swallowed the stage with the power of his verse, stepping from subdued deep hot sad love poetry to hip-hop power chord meta-meter, throttling the crowd with the weight of his rhymes, and effectively wiping the stage with us. And so, a whole new generation of rhyme readers will be born..."

Glenbow's In Residence program invites diverse artists from a variety of disciplines to interact with Glenbow's exhibitions and art collections and create a new work that debuts to the public at Glenbow. The first year of In Residence saw Calgary singer/songwriter Kris Demeanor develop and facilitate a series of participatory encounters where audience members became co-creators.
Show your romantic side with an evening outside the traditional dinner and a movie this Valentine's Day.

Warning: Language may be challenging for a younger audience.
