An Italian Sunset: Mountain View Connection & Lougheed House

I have always enjoyed Chamber Music, it sounds weird-- I think. I came home from a day of school in grade 4 raving about these high school students who came to perform for my class. They style of music was apparently called "Chamber Music" and all I could picture was a chamber pot and someone playing a violin into it but I was still in love. My  mum thought I was crazy....

Since then, I have found a special place for classical (and more specifically Chamber Music) in my life as I have found it to be powerful at creating a peaceful mindset. When I saw this event I jumped on it, the Lougheed House is beautiful and as a big fan of Italian opera's.. personally, I can't think of a more beautiful way to spend a Monday night.

Oh and wine.

Stuart McLean: Christmas Concert 2013

Yes, it's August (AGAIN) but it's also the end of August and that usually means thoughts about Christmas (AGAIN). It's true but that's only because this is the time of year that the Stuart McLean Christmas Concert tickets go on sale (AGAIN).

You might SHOULD be familiar with his heart warming show in the CBC, well this is live and it's all about Christmas and all about fuzzy warm traditions and doing things from the heart. For me, there is no better way to start off Christmas then with a dose of Stuart McLean. Love!

Hipster Love Story: Gotye with Chairlift & Jonti

You may have heard, Gotye is coming to calgary. If you've listen to the rest of the album you'll understand that there is more to the band then just a catchy break-up song. That's not what I'm here to tell you though, there are two bands opening up for Gotye... one of them being Chairlift.

Be prepared for a great mood lifter with the likes of this new song from Chairlift. It just makes you want to dance carefree through a library just like the cast of Breakfast Club. Catchy, poppy and the perfect way to kick off your work week, here’s “I Belong in Your Arms”

Sounds like a hipsters love affair if you ask me. I'm kind of excited for this.

The Calgary Folk Fest Comedy Tent

For the first time ever The Calgary Folk Fest will include the jeers, cheers and chuckles of talented funny people in their newest addition... the Talk Tent.

The Talk Tent will run Saturday and Sunday from 11 am - 5 pm, and is programmed chock-a-block with stand up comedians, interviews, and a special celebration of the 100th birthday of Woody Guthrie. Bring your festival chair and have a seat on the grass under the tent (it will be shady!).

Here is a peak at who will be attending:

Atomic Improv

Donovan Workun and Mark Meer have been creating comedy-on-the-spot based entirely on audience suggestions for over 2 decades. Their fast paced, high-energy show incorporates a range of styles, characters and hooks to produce a comedy pressure cooker. They’ll also be doing sketches from their national CBC Radio comedy program The Irrelevant Show, an irreverent take on pop culture that ranges from the everyday to the surreal, including scenes about family life, dating, relationships, the workplace, the news and superheros.

Chris Fairbanks

Stand-up comic, writer, artist, actor, twitterer, skateboardinger. He’s a correspondent for action sports channel Fuel TV and a Comedy Central reality show Reality Bites Back regular. When not touring as a stand-up comic, Fairbanks earns his living as a poster artist, animator and illustrator.

Richard Flohill

Richard is a Toronto-based publicist, writer and concert promoter who has influenced, supported or managed more than 100 artists over 40 years. His experience and abiding love of music make him an informed and engaging presenter and interviewer who gets deep into artists’ music, history and stories. A dedicated carnivore, Richard has thrived all these years without letting a piece of lettuce, a carrot or cucumber pass his lips. He’ll do a panel with festival artists on their war/travel stories, interview individual artists and share information about how to make a living in music.

Kevin McDonald

Comedian, actor, writer and director, The Kids in the Hall co-founder Kevin McDonald is known for his popular recurring characters the King of Empty Promises, Sir Simon Milligan and Jerry Sizzler. McDonald has appeared in many films and television programs, including Seinfeld, Friends, MADtv, Tim and Eric's Awesome Show Great Job! and Arrested Development and hosted his own CBC show Sketch with Kevin McDonald.

Derek Seguin

A quintessential performer, seasoned stand-up comedian, actor, host and narrator, he’s a regular on CBC Radio’s The Debators and Just for Laughs. Derek’s takes on the world have a hysterical Quebecois flare. Whether ragging on politics or describing life with his children, he deftly brings audiences into his perspective.

Walking Woody’s Road

Jimmy Lafave and his collaborators celebrate and chronicle the life and writings of legendary singer/songwriter Woody Guthrie for the 100th anniversary of his birth through stories, songs and video.

The schedule will be announced alongside the full weekend schedule at the end of June.

A Joni Mitchell Evening: The Blue Album Re-Interpreted

I have a music bucket list and one of the only artists I haven't seen and doubt I ever will is the one and only Joni Mitchell. She's a story teller, a mood maker and a songstress. She is amazing yet so simple. A Canadian treasure.

A Joni Mitchell Evening: The Blue Album Re-Interpreted is probably the closest I'll ever get to seeing her, but I'll take it.
Join AJ Benoit, Kenna Burima, Steve Fletcher, Simon Fisk and Kristoffer Benoit in exploration of Joni Mitchell's Blue album.

Bend your ear to the sounds of Joni's poetry as we interpret some of her best known work into works
of our own.

Something a Little Different for Valentines Day

This season's In Residence program features award-winning spoken word poet Shane Koyczan. On the most celebrated day of love, Koyczan will be back to premiere more new work directly inspired by his time visiting the Glenbow collection which exposed him to many stories of love.

Koyczan is remembered by many for his performance at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. For many, his performance was the highlight of the evening and it was that performance that launched Koyczan to the world stage.

The sincerity and wit in Shane's poems are known to speak directly to the heart and you may find yourself laughing hysterically and crying uncontrollably all in one evening. David Bidini, who writes for The Globe and Mail remarked, "Shane swallowed the stage with the power of his verse, stepping from subdued deep hot sad love poetry to hip-hop power chord meta-meter, throttling the crowd with the weight of his rhymes, and effectively wiping the stage with us. And so, a whole new generation of rhyme readers will be born..."

Glenbow's In Residence program invites diverse artists from a variety of disciplines to interact with Glenbow's exhibitions and art collections and create a new work that debuts to the public at Glenbow. The first year of In Residence saw Calgary singer/songwriter Kris Demeanor develop and facilitate a series of participatory encounters where audience members became co-creators.
Show your romantic side with an evening outside the traditional dinner and a movie this Valentine's Day.

Warning: Language may be challenging for a younger audience.
