Kim's Convenience presented by Theater Calgary

Every year my friend Diana and I buy subscription tickets to Theater Calgary. I love this time of year, summer is about parties and being outside and a break from the norm but as the days get shorter and the nights get cooler, we all migrate inside and experience theater. The first play of the season always welcomes this transition.
 
 
This year, the play is called Kim's Convenience and I'm excited to see it. It has received rave reviews since debuting at the Toronto Fringe Festival last year, critics calling it touching and funny (my favorite combo of emotions if you ask me).

Korean immigrant Mr. Kim is nearing retirement and wondering what will happen to his convenience store when he stops running it. This family tale that looks to the past and future with love and laughter is by Toronto's Soulpepper Theatre Company, presented by Theatre Calgary.

First Date Heaven

Avenue Magazine just posted a cute little article on the 8 Perfect Places for a First Date which I think is a pretty solid selection. I have been on many first dates and one of my favorite things to look for is something other than dinner. Trust me, I love to go out and eat but if you are meeting someone for the first time, sometimes you don't want to sit through a 6 course meal together.

 

I also like to dress down. I wear less make-up and maybe stay out of heels. It's silly, but I think if a man likes me as a normal person then he'll really like what he sees when I get dressed up.

 

Going to a place like National on 10th (341-10th Ave SW Calgary AB, 403 474 2739, info@ntnl.ca)

is wicked because they have so many other things (Ping pong, Fuzz ball and soon Bowling!) to do including an exclusive whisky room if you want to get a little closer.

 

Punk Rock Bingo is a solid choice too or even The Oak Tree Tavern for their Sunday Stu's Big Surf Bing and sometimes they have movie nights on Monday where you can eat candy and watch corny films and get drunk.

 

I once had an afternoon date on a Saturday on the patio of the Palomino. It was beautiful and casual and you can eat bacon wrapped corn on the cob and listen to awesome music as you learn about your handsome partner across the table.

 

Nothing takes the pressure off like doing something a little laid back.

 

Another wicked thing to do is head up to Bowness Park (which, right  now is under major construction) and canoodle in a canoe or paddle boat. If it's winter, you can skate around the lagoon and feel majestic. Once you've worked up an appetite being active, head to Cadence Coffee or for something a little more special NOtaBLE (that's only if you really like each other).

 

These are just some of my basic suggestions to get you past the awkward times. Finding places with games and a casual atmosphere is ideal I think. But I guess that's if you want to date someone like me.

Movie: For a Good Time, Call...

 

 

 

I went to a screener of For a Good Time, Call.... last night and I loved it. It was fresh, it was funny, it was bubble gum pink mixed with zombie strippers (minus the zombies). It was Bridesmaid's reduced. It was a dirty talking girlfriends and sex toy parties. It was a movie that was filmed in 16 days and you can't tell one bit. Simply perfect like confetti cupcakes and butter cream icing with sugar skull candies.

It's spanks as a date rape preventive.

It's 1-800-mmmHmmm

It's Snow White meets Barbarella and they become besties.

It's Justin Long, Kevin Smith and Seth Rogan all smashed in one.

It's sweet but with edge. This is a movie to bring your girlfriends too, maybe your guy friends (they'll enjoy the vulgar, sexy conversations) and perhaps your progressive, independent mom if you have that kind of an adult friendship with her. Don't bring your kids though (side note, I'm sick of people bringing babies and kids to movies that aren't meant for kids)- that's a no-no for sure.

Check you what Calgay's FFWD had to say about it.

It's girls being real, girls being funny and girls being awesome. If you have no qualms about sexy talk and sass then I think you might like it. It made my night but then I went into thinking it was going to be an awful movie that was filmed in 16 days that might make me roll my eyes out of pure classlessness.

I was wrong. It's fab. Its a good time with no strings attached.

Hipster Love Story: Gotye with Chairlift & Jonti

 

 

 

 

You may have heard, Gotye is coming to calgary. If you've listen to the rest of the album you'll understand that there is more to the band then just a catchy break-up song. That's not what I'm here to tell you though, there are two bands opening up for Gotye... one of them being Chairlift.

 

Be prepared for a great mood lifter with the likes of this new song from Chairlift. It just makes you want to dance carefree through a library just like the cast of Breakfast Club. Catchy, poppy and the perfect way to kick off your work week, here’s “I Belong in Your Arms”

Sounds like a hipsters love affair if you ask me. I'm kind of excited for this.

What is fantastic about this festival is you can do anything. It's like a weekend to be, do, create whatever you desire. Some of the things done last year were:


Insomniac’s Art Party
Stay up making art all night with Bogdan, who believes that insomnia and art go together like dogs and bones. Whatever state your skill is in and whatever form it takes, come spend the night making art, watching movies and cooking food, in an attempt to focus on the relationship between insomnia and art.
Duct Tape Duels
Make your own padded sword and wage war against friend and foe to the sounds of pummeling drums.

Pajama Making Workshop
Skipped out on Home Ec.? Interested in dinosaur-print flannel loungewear? Learn the art of pajama-making from a mother of four.

Jurassic Park: The Ride
Universal Studios comes North! Follow a tour guide through the Jurrasic Park of your dreams. Raptor shooting range, full-sized inflatable garbage bag dinos, suspense and mystery… it will be the best!!! Bring your bikes or something to roll on.

and that's only a few of the creative and fantastic things to expect. Each year is different and it reminds us to love the city we live in, the people we know and don't know yet and just to play as long as you can.
